Why turtles were called red-eared

The red-eared slider

Of the eight species of the genus Decorated Turtles (Cbrysemys) that live in the waters of the Americas, the most well-known slender eared tortoise (Cbrysemys scripta elegans). The shell of an adult red-eared turtle, covered with wrinkles, can reach a length of 28 centimeters.

It is hard to say why the tortoise became rubella. Neither her, nor any other turtles have what we call ears. These reptiles are endowed with neither the auricle, nor even the external auditory canal. They have a tympanic membrane on their head - an elastic plate that we have inside the head, between the outer and middle ears.

Nevertheless, all the turtles, although many still consider them deaf, hear quite well, however, low sounds: up to 3000 hertz. And the hearing sensitivity of the red-eared turtle is simply amazing. At frequencies from 100 to 700 hertz, she hears almost the same faint sounds as a cat.

it is also not clear because the spot behind their eyes is not only bright red, but also bright yellow. In general, the color of these turtles is extremely diverse, in addition, it varies greatly with age.

Red-eared turtles are found in the eastern states of the USA, to Lake Michigan and Washington, and in northeastern Mexico. They live in shallow lakes and ponds with low, swampy shores. In March or April, absolutely all adult residents of these reservoirs are concerned only with one thing:

 how to end loneliness?

Among the male turtles living on our planet, there are few that are capable of caring for their friends in any way. Therefore, we must pay tribute to the behavior of males of red-eared turtles. Each of them, having met with a female, manages to be right in front of her muzzle, and very close. Since courtship takes place in water, the female slowly swims at this time. The male also swims, but, of course, reversed. Not only that, he manages to keep his front legs with long claws extended all the time, and even makes them tremble.

Eggs in red-eared turtles are no more than 4 centimeters. To postpone them, the female leaves the pond and goes to land. Having found a suitable place, she strongly moistens the earth with water from anal bubbles. After that, he begins to dig a hole in the back, the nest. The nests of red-eared turtles look like a ball with a diameter of 7 to 25 centimeters, in which females lay 5 to 22 eggs, which they then bury.
