How to Take Care of a Land Turtle
Land turtles live in deserts, steppes, forests. They enter the water only for swimming and often during sleep. Their carapace is more massive than that of other turtles. They feed on plant foods, but sometimes eat insects and even carrion. The largest representatives of the family are the Galapagos and Seychelles (elephant) turtles.
Land turtles actively move only at a sufficiently high temperature, when the processes in their body will proceed at normal speed. Turtles living in deserts fall into suspended animation not only in winter, but also closer to autumn, when there is intense heat and there is almost no food. Sometimes they go out for some time to feed in late autumn, when the heat subsides, and then they are already preparing for wintering.
Externally, land turtles are similar in shape, but differ in color, number and type of scutes and claws.
